The first trailer carrying hydrogen gas made on Eday has arrived in Kirkwall.
The unit came on Orkney Ferries’ Earl Sigurd vessel, which the project chartered for a special run. In these early days, while crews are gaining experience with the units, chartered sailings are the best way to avoid any disruption to other ferry users, and to comply with all the maritime regulations.
Once ferry crews are accustomed to the procedures, Surf ’n’ Turf will move towards shipping hydrogen on ordinary scheduled runs, just like existing businesses who transport petrol, diesel or bottled gas. We will maintain our effort to minimise disruption to local people and other ferry passengers.
