Fuel cell Kirkwall touch down

The fuel cell has safely landed in Kirkwall after its journey from the manufacturer in Germany. Staff from Arcola Energy (the fuel cell supplier) were on hand to guide the unit into place as it was craned off a lorry.

From the outside it's a blue metal box, but inside are three hydrogen fuel cell modules (each rated at 25kW) as well as batteries, power electronics and cooling systems to allow the system to take in hydrogen, chemically react it with air, and make electricity and water.

Once it's been commissioned, the unit's power will supply local electrical and heat demand around the pier, including ferries when they are berthed.
